NEW: House Education Panel to Explore Career & Tech Training

The House Commission to Study Public Higher Education Affordability and Accessibility in Rhode Island has scheduled a meeting tomorrow to hear from several authorities on business-higher education partnerships, economic development and career and technical training.

The meeting is scheduled today  from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Room 135 on the first floor of the State House.

The commission, led by Rep. Frank Ferri (D-Dist. 22, Warwick), is scheduled to hear from Department of Labor and Training Director Charles J. Fogarty; Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce Senior Vice President of Economic Development and Operations Janet Raymond; and Dr. Nancy Hoffman, vice president and senior advisor of Jobs for the Future, a national nonprofit based in Boston that focuses on improving educational and workforce outcomes for low-income young people and adults.

The commission, which was established last year by legislation (2011-H 5193) sponsored by House Speaker Gordon D. Fox, is studying the administrative and academic decisions and practices that affect affordability and accessibility of public higher education in Rhode Island as well as other states’ efforts to improve affordability and accessibility. It will issue recommendations on actions that can be taken to make education more affordable and accessible.
