Following House passage of a two-month extension of payroll tax cuts and unemployment benefits, U.S. Congressman David Cicilline (D-RI) issued the following statement:

“I applaud today’s passage of important tax cuts for middle class families, which extends unemployment benefits for more than 11,000 Rhode Islanders and maintains $400 million in tax relief for an estimated 600,000 hardworking men and women in our state. However, it is regrettable that Tea Party extremists in the Republican Party were able to delay this legislation for so long. Enacting policies that benefit hardworking men and women is the right thing to do, and it should be easy – even in Washington, D.C.”

“I hope that my colleagues in the Republican Party can now recognize that legislation should be the art of compromise and the ability to put the needs of Americans ahead of partisan politics. As we work to extend the middle class tax cut and unemployment benefits for a full year, let us also refocus on passing legislation that will expand job opportunities, reinvigorate American manufacturing, and retrain our workforce. With more than 13 million of our friends and neighbors still unable to find work, it’s long past time for the Republican House leadership to finally do the right thing for middle class families.”
