Congressman David Cicilline is criticizing Republican congressional candidate Brendan Doherty for not supporting the “Buffett Rule,” which would have raised taxes on the wealthiest Americans.

According to a release sent by the Cicilline campaign, Republicans are too focused on slashing Pell Grants, ending the Medicare guarantee, and defunding Planned Parenthood all while working relentlessly to protect tax subsidies for Big Oil, tax loopholes for corporations that ship jobs overseas and tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.

"Of course, the tax code needs comprehensive reform, including closing loopholes and ending subsides to Big Oil and large agricultural corporations. No one is suggesting passing of the Buffett Rule is all that is required, but it's an important part of tax reform and really a question of basic fairness," said Congressman Cicilline. "Reasonable people on both sides of the aisle should be able to come together and agree that this is a pragmatic step we can take immediately to bring more fairness to our tax code and to generate revenues to reduce our deficit."

He continued: “I have heard from people like small business owners, elementary school teachers and people out of work and I know just how frustrated they are that Washington won’t act and pass the Buffett Rule. This is a common sense piece of legislation that would help restore people’s faith in our tax code; it is simply unfair for corporate CEOs to pay a lower tax rate than their workers."
