Guest MINDSETTER™ Terry Gorman: Deck is Stacked Against RI on Illegal Immigration

Tuesday, December 11, 2012

It is nearly impossible these days to read and listen to the news without seeing increasing evidence of what I refer to as "the Obama-Chafee Agenda" concerning Illegal Immigration and our Education Systems. Their Agenda is being fueled by incrementalism and enticements - more and more entitlements a little at a time. When the citizens finally realize what has happened it will be too late to reverse course.

As you can surmise, my frustration level is at an all time high. I fully intend to remain in the fight despite the tremendous way the deck seems stacked against us. Here are the some of the ways the deck is stacked:

1) The President favors additional benefits for Illegal aliens;

2) All four of our Congressional Delegates rubber stamp his intentions;

3) We all know where our so-called Governor stands;

4) Our Senate President stated to me personally that she believes E-Verify laws are solely meant to discriminate against people with Brown skin. This from her firm position "under a rock."';

5) The Speaker of the House, the most powerful person in our state, guaranteed RIILE last session that E-Verify legislation would receive his full attention and a fair hearing in the Labor committee only to prevent the legislation from getting a Labor committee vote after the testimony. There were ten of thirteen Representatives on the committee that stated to RIILE their intention to vote in favor of E-Verify at the hearing;

6) We now have, thanks to complacent Rhode Islanders, a 102 to 11 Democrat majority in our legislature most of whom do only the Speaker's bidding;

7) We are seriously enticing additional Illegal aliens to come to our state to take advantage of the following:

  • Early Childhood learning programs for Illegal alien students under 5 years old, which is against the law;
  • Free K-12 education, no limit on the number of Illegal alien students that can arrive next September to enter our school systems;
  • In-State tuition for Illegal alien students at our state colleges, again against the law;
  • Almost zero enforcement of the immigration laws against employers hiring Illegal aliens;
  • Open door policy at our hospitals for Illegal alien pregnant women to deliver their babies. DHS had 350 in their system last year. Free pre-natal care, free delivery of the child, free post-partum care and free long term family planning;
  • A Health Care Clinic in our state that just received a $345,000 grant last week announced that it is their intention to provide free health care to Illegal aliens;
  • Our Governor just agreed to look into driver's licenses for Illegal aliens.

What Illegal alien worth his salt, seeing all the above benefits, would not be enticed into making Rhode Island an ideal location for his family? How could he/she resist all of the benefits? We already are seeing the chilling effect Illegal Immigration is having on our State budget. How much more can we sustain without going over our own Fiscal Cliff?

Every Rhode Islander who cares about his/her family, state and country should be at least as frustrated and as outraged as I am. Is it any wonder that illegal aliens look to Rhode Island as a destination state?

I know some would say I might be uncaring and insensitive but I firmly believe that all of the above reasons detract from the opportunities we are supposed to be providing to US Citizens and Legal Immigrants in our State first. Why are our Lawmakers knowingly allowing lawbreakers to continually, flagrantly and with impunity, break our laws, consequently watering-down all of our Social Services and Education systems? Why are we allowing them to do this to us, right in front of our eyes, without even a peep of objection?

Remember - "Silence is Consent"

Terry Gorman is the executive director of Rhode Islanders for Immigration Law Enforcement.

many good valid points here.

look at california..the immigrants have bankrupted the satte and the voters still vote democrat based on social issues.

if your state or country is bankrupt and nobody has jobs, then who cares about social issues??

Add to the list illegals fraudulently using the child tax credit to MAKE money off the US tax system. Here's the story from an Indiana news station investigation:

Arthur Googy

This is a bunch of Racist nonsense. We need to make the citizenship process more streamlined and easier to navigate. I would love to have everyone who is in RI and undocumented on the tax roles. They just want what is best for their families, just like the rest of us.

Arthur Googy

And on a side note, the immigrants in my community make it a better place. They have brought wonderful food, culture, and a great work ethic with them. Just like the Italians, Portugeuse, and Irish before them. They have made our state a better place to be, and for that I am grateful.

Russ Hryzan

Arthur - I never once saw the author state in this article "this doesn't apply to illegal aliens of white/European decent, only to the the Hispanic community", so I think everybody knows you're just being a typical liberal and lying to try to make your irrelevant point.

Every time someone brings up facts and truth about the illegal immigration issue, liberals turn it into a racism issue. It's an issue about enforcing our federal laws and keeping this country safe and not giving unfair advantages to illegal immigrants while we have so many lawful immigrants who wait years in line to come in legally and follow all the rules. It's not about racism, it's about not rewarding and not promoting lawbreaking. It's also about the massive costs and enormous and unfair burdens that illegal immigration places on the rest of the country, the public school systems, and on the US job market.

"I know some would say I might be uncaring and insensitive"

Well, he's got that part right.

Art West

Arthur, as you well know, nobody has a problem with LEGAL immigration. If you know anything about the immigration process (I do) you know that it can be a long one.

Citizens of other countries who instead crash the gates show a huge disrespect for those who go through the legal process.

Then we have politicians like Chafee who want to hand out other people's money to attract and reward illegal behavior? If you want to set up your own foundation to do this, fine, go for it -- Gov. Chafee is a one-percenter who can be your biggest donor. But don't divert the public's money for this purpose.

Arthur Googy

To claim that there is no racial element to this is just plain silly. All of these groups have an Us vs Them mentality - Hell, just look at the stock photo that was chosen to run with this story. I don't see a white guy from Toronto. For most people being an "illegal alien" isn't even a criminal act, it is a civil one. People just like to say "illegals" because it's more socially acceptable than a racial slur.

I am all for making it easier for people to gain citizenship. I would love for all my neighbors and fellow parents at my kids school to be citizens and paying taxes. A constant influx of immigrants is what keeps this nation great. No one comes here because everything is fine in their country. They come here for the American dream with the hopes of giving their family a better life. I can't hold that against anyone, legal or not.

jon paycheck

googy.. dont wish too much for what you wnat you might just get it.

so lets let 50,000 illegal immigrants into ri each year for the enxt 5 years.

so in 5 years ri population is up 25%.

the new immigrants are all wionderful people but have limited money, don't speak english, don't have health insurance.

who pays for the health care, increased school costs,where do they live? who pays for food stamps,job training etc

who pays???

its not a sical issue - its about money - tehre is none left!!!!

its nobodys fault-its life... not everyone gets the same in life.. grow up!!

jon paycheck

this si not a racial slur!!!

and suppose they come from russia, asia, africa, soth america -all different lanbguages

who will pay for all the teachers for these kids

Joseph Bernstein

This is an excellent article.People who go to the default arguments of 'racism"or "insensitivity'do so because they haven't got a valid basis for disagreeing with the writer on a factual basis.
We are either a nation or laws or we aren't.We can't just decide immigration laws are to be ignored and expect our system to survive intact.

jon paycheck

ditto joe b---logical comments are displaced with illogicla emotional comments

george pratt

The writer has a great point. People in poor countries should come here illegally. Its hard to blame somebody for going where there will be more opportunity for their kids. Our government refuses to put troops on the border, or enforce our immigration laws. Once they're in, its free health care and school for your kids. We need immigration reform. But until then we should stop educating and medicating people here illegally.
