EVACUATION NOTICES: South Kingstown, Westerly, Narragansett & Bristol (Updated 7pm)

The towns of South Kingstown, Westerly and Narragansett have issued mandatory evacuation orders to residents ahead of Hurricane Sandy.

The notices from each town are below:

No later than 6:00am, Monday, October 29, 2012, a MANDATORY EVACUATION NOTICE has been issued by the Town of South Kingstown. Residents who have received this notice should seek shelter away from the South Shore coast line and low lying areas near Narrow River. Residents are requested to find shelter with friends and family. The flooding of coastal roads and loss of access/egress to/from low lying neighborhoods is anticipated. Over the next several days astronomical high tides are forecast and will increase the likelihood of road closings. The first of several high tides predicted to impact local road access will occur Monday morning between 7:30am and 8:30am.

The Town’s main emergency shelter is located at the South Kingstown High School, 215 Columbia Street Wakefield, RI. The shelter will be available for those requiring assistance as of 7:00pm, Sunday October 28, 2012 and continuing until further notice. Routine transportation is available for those requiring assistance. All non-emergency related questions should be directed to the South Kingstown Police Department at 401-783-3321.

Things to remember before you leave home:

Medications – All required medications, medical supplies, and other medically necessary supplies should be taken in sufficient quantities to last five (5) or more days. Reusable cooling packs should be utilized to keep medications requiring refrigeration cool, and stored in labeled lunch box size containers.

Safety Hazard: Be sure to turn off all liquid propane tanks at the tank. This includes grills and large yard tanks.

Animals: Residents are encouraged to shelter their animals with friends and family. If you must bring your pet to the South Kingstown Animal Shelter, located at Asa Pond Rd. in Wakefield, (789-5515), please be sure to have a current vaccination record and contact information; along with any necessary medications, properly labeled; a photograph of you with your pet is also recommended.

WARNING: Hurricane/Tropical Storm Sandy is a large and dangerous storm with severe flooding, storm surge, coastal erosion, wind conditions and power outages expected. People must understand that until the storm is over emergency services will not be available to people that fail to evacuate.

You can also register for the Town’s Emergency Notification System (Everbridge) on the Town’s web site. By registering, the Town can provide you with important information via multiple forms of media, including, multiple phone #’s, cell phone, texts, emails and TTY/TDD.

WESTERLY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

AREA OF EVACUATION:

All residences and businesses in Misquamicut south of Shore Road and the low-lying areas of Weekapaug, Watch Hill, Avondale, and along the Pawcatuck River up to the Stillman Avenue Bridge

Westerly Town Manager Steven T. Hartford is ordering the evacuation of low-lying coastal areas. Residents are ordered to evacuate their residences and businesses by 8:00PM Sunday.

Residents needing emergency shelter may respond to the Red Cross Shelter located at the Chariho Middle School at 455 Switch Road in Wood River Junction, Rhode Island. The shelter will open at 5:00PM Sunday. Westerly will provide transportation from the Westerly Senior Center at 39 State Street at 6:30PM and 8:30PM Sunday.

Pet owners may bring their pets to the Westerly Animal Shelter at 33 Larry Hirsch Lane until 10:00PM Sunday.

All residents are urged to call 211 for any questions which are not an emergency.

TOWN OF NARRAGANSETT

A mandatory evacuation of all flood prone and lowlying areas by 6am Monday has been issued by the Town of Narragansett, residentes in these area should seek shelter with friends or family or at the South Kingstown High School 215 Columbia Street Wakefield.

No animals are aloud at the shelter, animals can be sheltered at the South Kingstown animal shelter on Asa Pond Rd, South Kingstown.

Shelter:

The emergency shelter for the town has been moved to the South Kingstown High School located at 215 Columbia Street in Wakefield. This shelter is open to all residents of South Kingstown and Narragansett and others will not be turned away. Proof of residency is not required and the shelter is provided at no charge. Ample parking is provided in any of the lots around the building. Announcements will be made regarding when and if the shelter will be opening.

Those seeking shelter should bring the following items:

Medications for at least 3 days

Personal hygiene items

Sleeping bag or blankets

Shelter General Rules:

No Pets, Weapons, Drugs, Smoking or Alcohol

Lights out at 10:30pm

No food other than pre-packaged items (Candy bars, etc.)

Please respect the privacy of others. No loud talking, radios, etc.

Please see the staff nurse if you need medications you were unable to bring with you or if you currently have a cold or other medical condition.

If you must leave the shelter for any reason (including smoking) you MUST sign out with the registration desk.

TOWN OF BRISTOL

Residents in low lying areas have been notified by the Police and Fire Departments of a mandatory evacuation notice. During the storm the Town of Bristol Public Safety Director, along with the Police and Fire Chiefs are asking that all citizens of Bristol stay indoors and off the streets and public ways until told otherwise by state or local officials.
