The proposed budget fully funds the new education funding formula and provides additional money for higher education.

“Last year, the General Assembly passed historic legislation creating an education funding formula to ensure that our cities and towns have a stable and predictable source of revenue to invest in public education,” Chafee said. “My budget honors that agreement by providing additional funds necessary to support the school funding formula.”

Chafee also pledged to reverse a trend of plummeting funding for higher education. He said he would put in an additional $10 million for the three state schools—University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, and the Community College of Rhode Island.

“We must demonstrate our commitment to higher education and to the young people of this state,” Chafee said. “There is no more important rung on the ladder to success.”
