Upscale urban flea marketing comes to Providence, kicking off this weekend with the opening day of The Providence Flea.

Providence is about to get a little more like Brooklyn this weekend, when The Providence Flea, the city's first and only upscale urban flea market, will open for the season on Sunday, June 2.

Providence Flea will feature 30 vendors on its opening day from 10 am - 4 pm, rain or shine, on the Providence River Greenway at the end of South Water Street (across from The Wild Colonial Tavern). The Flea will be held every Sunday through August 25th, from 10 am – 4 pm, rain or shine. Inspired by what its organizers call "the insanely popular and funky urban flea markets of Brooklyn,"  the weekly summer event in Providence is a curated market offering vintage and upcycled fashions for men, women and children, jewelry and accessories made from upcycled and vintage beads and and recycled objects, housewares, antiques, collectibles, repurposed furniture, curiosities, kitsch and more.

Food trucks + more

The Providence Flea will also feature some of the city’s favorite food trucks, including on Opening Day: Radish Gourmet, Plouf Plouf Gastronomie, Rocket Fine Street Food, Fusion Gourmet Asian cuisine, Fancheezical, PVD Pudding Pops, Like No Udder vegan ice cream, and Joedega Coffee. In addition to the Flea's dozens of hand-selected vendors appearing on a rotating schedule throughout the summer on Sundays, the market will also host a number of non-profits in a commitment to supporting local causes, featuring the Providence Animal Rescue League and RiverzEdge Arts Project on Opening Day.

Location, location, location

Located in a prime downtown location along the Providence River with a view of the city skyline looking north, and of the Iway bridge looking south (the inspiration for The Flea’s logo), the site is also easily accessible by public transportation and offers plenty of free, on-street parking on Sundays. Just a stone’s throw from the East Side, the bustling Wickenden Street brunch crowd, and a short ride from the West Side, The Providence Flea aims to draw more people to the downtown area in the summer. With a host of individual collectors, pickers, artists, artisans, entrepreneurs and virtual storefront owners who create, sell or resell upcycled, recycled, re-purposed and re-used wares, as well as a small selection of handmade local crafts, The Flea most importantly will provide an easy and affordable venue to support even the smallest local vendors in a reinvented version of the old-world style, open-air city market.

Openings still available

The Providence Flea is accepting vendor applications on the web site at www.providenceflea.com throughout the summer on a rolling basis, space permitting. For more information, featured vendors and daily updates, follow The Providence Flea on Twitter (twitter.com/providenceflea) and Facebook (facebook.com/providenceflea), and on the blog at www.providenceflea.com.
