Wednesday, October 13, 2010
AmericanStyle readers cast their votes based upon the unique and interesting ways in which cities use the arts to fuel tourism. According to Siemering, Providence is a popular test market for artists looking to try out a new installation before taking it nationwide. “People try things out here a lot before they go across the country because of the receptive public that we have that other cities may not,” she said. “We have people that support the arts on multiple levels. [Artists] get a lot of feedback here."
Cities in the poll were also recognized for their clear understanding of the value of the arts in their community, and their ability to put significant effort behind promoting cultural institutions as tourist destinations. A 2007 study conducted by Americans for the Arts underscores the substantial impact of arts organizations on the local economy. According to the study, arts and cultural organizations in Providence generated nearly $112 million in annual economic activity, more than twice the national average, and supported 2,759 full-time jobs.
