NEW: 5 RI Communities Make National “Liveability” List
Monday, August 08, 2011
Five Rhode Island communities are among the most liveable in the nation, according to Liveability.com.
The Web site that showcases the best places in America to live released its newest list of the top 500 cities and towns throughout the United States. Not surprisingly, Rhode Island held its own against the big guns, featuring 5 communities among the comprehensive register. Although these communities fall in no particular order, the honor of inclusion in the list is still an achievement.
Rhode Island's most liveable: Bristol, Cranston, Warwick, Westerley and Woonsocket.

Liveability.com used numerous criteria including population, median housing price, recreation areas, and nearby colleges, to assess cities and towns. Let's take a look at what Liveability found to love about our big five.
Bristol
This notoriously patriotic little town is a quiet community with plenty of charm to offer. Liveability.com classified it as a “mostly older” community with lots of married couples and homeowners. Adding to its high ranking was its close proximity to TF Green Airport as well as Roger Williams University.
Cranston
This town that GoLocalProv ranked as the best community in Rhode Island, once again impressed. Liveability
categorized Cranston as a “mostly singles” community with large numbers of homeowners and an elderly population. It was also called a “green city” with easy access to the hustle and bustle of Providence.Warwick
The second largest community in the state of Rhode Island and home to Rhode Island’s fabled “Miracle Mile of Shopping,” Warwick was referred to as the “state’s retail capital.” Liveability cited Warwick's mostly middle-aged population and majority of married couples. Proximity to Kent Hospital helped its standing as well.
Westerly
Rhode Island's shoreline beauty offers one of the state’s best beachfront communities. The population is known to increase heavily during the summer months due to its sprawling waterfront and “mild summer[s].” Liveability.com also classified it as a “mostly older” community with lots of homeowners and married couples. The town got a special shout-out for 11.6% of the population possessing Master's Degrees.
Woonsocket
Mysterious may be a word which aptly defines the northern Rhode Island town. While GoLocalProv ranked it as the worst community in Rhode Island, Liveability holds it as one of the top 5 in the state. What’s to give? It was classified as a “mostly younger” area (more than a quarter of the community is under age 19) with a large population of renters and singles.
