They're coming.

Get ready for more than 40 groups of quick-thinking, laugh-wielding improvisors to hit the streets starting Wednesday, when the 7th annual Providence Improv Fest kicks off and runs from June 23-27.

"The spirit of the FEST has always been to create, promote, and celebrate the ideas and skills that improvisational entertainment offers," says Melissa Bowler, the event's producer, who adds that groups are coming from everywhere from Boston and Portland, Maine, to New York City and Los Angeles. Basically, it's an improv lovers dream: hours of unpredicatable, often brilliant comedy, and all here in Providence.

Shows, shows, shows

Whether you're a fan of local faves like Improv Jones, Unexpected Company and Speed of Thought Players, or intrigued by last year's Best in Show winners Bastards Inc., or Neutrino Boston, which works with its audiences to create improvised films, you're in for comedy that works without a net.

And just like the act of improvisation itself, there's something new: this year, FEST 7 features the Two by Two Showcase (aka the Cross-Pollination Pageant), a show that puts performers from different groups the opportunitiy to improvise together in randomly paired, two-person teams.

The festival's schedule features several shows a night, all at Downcity's Perishable Theatre and the Speakeasy Under 121.

And for those wannbe's who just need a nudge (or a shove) onto the stage, check out the three $5 improv workshops at Perishable on Friday from 5:30-7, Saturday 2-3:30 (for teens), and Saturday 2-4. You'll get a chance to try it out with local standout improvers Casey Seymour Kim, Mauro Hantman, and Mike Varejao.
