Where Do Providence Mayoral Candidates Stand on Minority Issues?

Tony Affigne, the moderator of last night's debate among four candidates for Providence mayor, spoke with GoLocalProv about how they fared with minority voters.

The four candidates included three Democrats - Steven Costantino, John Lombardi, and Angel Taveras - and independent Jonathan Scott.

Affigne said the four candidates aced three questions on critical issues - the need for affordable and safe housing, a "safe space" for legal and undocumented immigrants, and strong civilian oversight over the police. But when it came to the fourth, and perhaps most important issue - including minorities in economic development - he said none of the candidates were impressive.

Affigne is a professor of political science at Providence College and a visiting professor of Latino politics at Brown University. He has the distinction of being the first Latino candidate for elective office in Rhode Island, when he ran for Providence City Council in 1982.
