Tom Terrific And Crew Not So Terrific – But Ratings Were

Monday, February 06, 2012

By now, Pats fans are half-way through the agonizing over Sunday’s Big Game.

A win against the Giants just not meant to be. But the ratings are in and the numbers are pretty impressive and a huge win for Channel 10.

Viewership Peaked At 9:45pm

Ratings numbers show the game on NBC and WJAR had a 47 rating and 61% share. One rating point represents about 6,200 households in the Providence television market watching a particular program at a specific time. So quick math shows the Pats/Giants game had about 291,000 households watching the game. The share number represents the % of people who had their televisions on at the time who were watching the game. An easy way to look at it is that over 60% of the people in Southern New England who had their TV’s on Sunday night were watching the game.

The highest number of people watching here locally came in the 9:45pm quarter hour with a 51 whopping 51 rating and 71% share.

A Look At the National Numbers

According to tvspy.com, Sunday’s game was the 3rd highest rated Super Bowl nationally of all time. Not surprisingly, the game had huge ratings in Boston, New York and also Indy where the game was held.

In Boston, the game was highest rated NFL game in history for that market with a 56.7 rating and a 81% share. In New York, the game earned a 49.7 rating and a 74% share.

10 & 12 Coverage

Both Channel’s 10 & 12 deserve credit for coverage and dedicaiton of resources to the game.

Each station had a team of people in Indy – covering the different angles. Sending people out of town like this is expensive and logsotically can be a nightmare sometimes as you are in the same space as local stations as well as the networks and the likes of ESPN etc. Finding stories with local flavor—and local people makes trips like this worthwhile and it also helps viewers to see what commitments local stations make to big events.
