Joe Lieberman, a long-time former United States Senator from Connecticut, died Wednesday at the age of 82.

Lieberman, a Democrat who served in Congress from 1989 to 2013, was the nominee for Vice President in the 2000 presidential election, running on the ticket with then-Vice President Al Gore.

His family issued the following statement of his passing:

"Former United States Senator Joseph I. Lieberman died this afternoon, March 27, 2024, in New York City due to complications from a fall. He was 82 years old. His beloved wife, Hadassah, and members of his family were with him as he passed. Senator Lieberman's love of God, his family, and America endured throughout his life of service in the public interest.”

He was the first Jewish candidate on a U.S. presidential ticket for a major party; he ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination for President in the 2004 election.

Lieberman went on to endorse Republican John McCain at the 2008 GOP National Convention.

While in the U.S. Senate, Lieberman championed legislation that led to the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security; he was also the sponsor of the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal Act of 2010.
