About Incident

Shortly before 1:30 AM Tuesday morning, police responded to the intersection of Glenham and Taylor Streets in South Providence for a report of a fire in the middle of the street.

According to police, the fire was a result of fireworks remnants. Police said that they had also been called to 12 Glenham Street earlier in the night for a complaint of loud music.

Police said a crowd of over 100 people had gathered in the street, preventing the Providence Fire Department from being able to access and extinguish the fire.

As police went to disperse the crowd, they said a man, later identified as Henry Rivers, age 31, began to yell obscenities and threaten police.

Police said they went to arrest Rivers when he refused to obey orders, at which time another man — later identified as Adrien Rivers, age 37, began to interfere and threaten officers.

According to police, both individuals resisted arrest and had to be physically restrained.

At this time, police said that the disturbance was so large that units from all districts responded to assist in the crowd dispersal.

Police say pepper spray was deployed in an attempt to break up the crowd.

As a result of the incident, one officer was treated for being struck in the face, and two officers for knee injuries.
