A Japanese apparel brand is slated to come to Providence Place Mall.

Signs announcing the arrival of Uniqlo can be seen on the first floor of the downtown shopping center, which in recent months has had a number of new store arrivals as well as departures -- see articles below.

“We exist to improve the lives of our customers and local communities. We create good quality clothing that lasts and is created under practices that prioritize people, planet, and society,” states Uniqlo on its website.

The company has courted top names including former top professional tennis player Roger Federer for its PR and advertising — and it has also faced controversy.

In 2021, Reuters reported that “Fast Retailing Co Ltd's Uniqlo brand shirts were blocked at the United States border in January on concerns they violated a ban on cotton products produced in the Xinjiang region of China, where there have been reports of forced labour.”

The company refuted the allegations

"Uniqlo has strong mechanisms in place to identify any potential violations of human and worker rights," the company said in a statement to Reuters. "All Uniqlo items use only cotton that originates from sustainable sources."

With stores worldwide, the company is on an ambitious expansion effort.

“To help drive that growth, Yoshihide Shindo was appointed earlier this summer as the brand’s new CEO of operations in the U.S. Uniqlo plans to have more than 200 physical stores in North America by 2027,” reported Glossy in October.
