Joe Shekarchi, on GoLocal LIVE last session.

Rhode Island House Majority Leader Joe Shekarchi has the votes for Speaker of the House, GoLocal has learned from multiple sources with firsthand knowledge.

Republican Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung is leading against Speaker of the House Nicholas Mattiello in District 15 in Cranston by a significant margin.

Fenton-Fung has 3,573 votes which equals 58.6%. Mattiello has won 2,501 for 41%.

There are less than 1,800 votes left to rescan in the 15th District.

There is a block of votes that are uncounted and ironically going before the Board of Elections — the group of votes in Cranston still to be counted tied to a corrupted computer storage stick.

Shekarchi, who was first elected in District 23 in Warwick in 2012, served as Chairman of the House Labor Committee until his Democratic colleagues elected him as the House Majority Leader in November 2016.

As GoLocal reported in May, Shekarchi topped all elected officials at the time for campaign war chests - edging out Mattiello — with $1.15 million cash on hand.

Prior to Election Day,  freshman Representative Liana Cassar (Democrat, District 66), who represents Barrington and Riverside, formally announced her bid for Speaker..

“With so many pressing challenges in the coming session because of the public health crisis and resulting economic disruption, I am urging my colleagues to consider how we want our chamber led,” said Cassar. “There is agreement from people on the inside and the outside of the House of Representatives that we need change.”

Shekarchi did not respond to request for comment Wednesday morning.
