This week in Vermont areas have picked from a few inches of new snow to as much as over two feet in areas like Jay Peak, Smugglers’ Notch and Sugarbush. There are good bases everywhere and areas are reporting anywhere from 10% of terrain open at Magic Mountain to 70% at Stratton. In the Granite State, there has not been nearly as much new snow this week although Bretton Woods is reporting 18-24” during the past 7 days. Most areas have had only a dusting to a few inches. Most New Hampshire areas are reporting over 25% of terrain open with Pats Peak and Crotched over 90%. This week in Maine, new snow has amounted to only a couple of inches up to 14” at Sunday River. Most report open terrain at less than 50%. The 12 areas in Massachusetts have had only a few inches of new natural snow here and there. Wachusett reports a 20-40” base along with 78% of their terrain open and they continue to make snow. Sundown in Connecticut is the only area in New England indicating that 100% of their terrain is open for business. Here in Rhode Island, Yawgoo has a 12-30” base, 6 of 12 trails open and they also continue to make snow. Since conditions can change rapidly at any given location, you should contact your favorite area for the latest before you head out.
The forecast is still not very promising for a big storm before Christmas. Fringe moisture from a big ocean storm far at sea will continue to throw off a few inches of powder here and there into Thursday but any widespread heavy snow is very unlikely. It will remain cold and snowmaking should continue unimpeded. There are hints of a big event after Christmas either late this weekend or early next week but that is still several days away and hardly etched in stone. That’s about it for this week.
