Ski areas all over New England are slowly coming to life. But the progress has been slow mainly because the area has yet to experience its first big general snowfall. With lots of cold air in place, some areas of Northern New England have picked up lots of natural snow this past week, mainly in the high mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire. Areas such as Killington, Jay Peak, Sugarbush, Stowe, Smugglers Notch and Bolton Valley in Vermont and Cannon and Bretton Woods in New Hampshire are reporting 2 to 4 feet of new snow this past week. But most other areas are reporting much less new snow. In Massachusetts, Wachusett continues to make snow and is grooming 12 trails and here in Rhode Island, Yawgoo Valley continues to make snow and is grooming 2 trails. As always, if you are planning to head out this weekend be sure to check first with your favorite area as conditions often change rapidly from day to day.
As for the future, the good news is that cold Arctic air will hold over all of New England at least through the weekend and into next week and probably beyond into Christmas. Over the next few days local snow squalls and mountain flurries will add powder here and there. But the real hope is for a large coastal storm to affect the area sometime this weekend and early next week. If that happens, and it is a strong possibility, it will be just in time for a BIG Christmas gift for skiers and ski area operators across the six state area.
