Weather: A Peek At The Week Ahead

Snow lovers across Southern New England are getting antsy. The cold air has arrived pretty much on schedule but, so far, there have been no storms big enough to produce much more than a few flurries here and there. And that is not sitting well with those who would love to see our first deep white blanket of the winter. Prospects for a big snowfall this week are still not much better but there is a glimmer of hope later in the week.

I’m looking for the cold air to hold in the Northeast through the workweek. There have been lots of “lake effect” snow squalls over much of Upstate New York, Pennsylvania and Western New England with locally monstrous snow amounts and occasionally one or two of those weakening snow showers will migrate into our area over the next couple of days. The two brightest days of the week for us should be Wednesday and Thursday as the “lake effect” clouds back off a bit. Then a weak disturbance will cross the area on Friday and that could bring us some light snow or mixed precipitation. High pressure will briefly control our weather with sunshine on Saturday before a more important storm forms along the east coast that holds the potential for significant snow and/or rain Sunday or Monday. It’s just too far down the road to be more specific and often predictions of storms so far in advance just don’t pan out.

The Ghiorse Factor should hold in the 6 or 7 range for the next couple of days then, in spite of the cold, kick up to an 8 for Wednesday and Thursday. It will dip to the 3-5 range on Friday and rise to 7 or better again by Saturday. If the Sunday/Monday storm materializes, a 1-3 Factor is in order.
