Saturday, November 15, 2014
College football season is winding down for all the local teams and this week they are all on the road. Bryant has a huge game with Sacred Heart for a chance at the NEC Regular season title. Meanwhile, Brown still has a chance at a winning record and URI visits Stony Brook for the first time ever. Here is the Rhode Island College Football Preview.
#21 Bryant University vs Sacred Heart, Saturday, November 15th, 12 p.m.
The #21 Bryant Bulldogs (8-1, 4-0 NEC) travel to Sacred Heart (8-2, 4-1 NEC) for a high stakes battle with the Pioneers on Saturday afternoon. The winner of this game either wins or keeps their hopes alive for a Northeast Title and an NCAA tournament bid. If Sacred Heart wins, they win the NEC title. If Bryant wins and Wagner losses then the Bulldogs win the NEC Title. If both Bryant and Wagner win, then that sets up a huge showdown between the two teams next weekend at Bryant University. For the Bulldogs to come away with the win, quarterback Dalton Easton will need to continue to play well like he did last week in Bryant's road win over Duquesne where he threw three touchdown passes to help the Bulldogs win a tight game. Running back Ricardo McCray will need to continue to be a monster out of the back field, last week he ran for 117 yards and had a receiving touchdown. Bryant's offense has clicked on all cylinders just about the entire season and they will need another big performance to beat Sacred Heart.
The Bryant defense is pretty good as well and will need to put up a big performance in this game against an explosive offense. Coming in, the Bulldogs defense is allowing just under 16 points, 171 passing yards and 122 rushing yards per game.
The Pioneers come into this game led by quarterback R.J. Noel who is one of the best in the NEC this season. Noel has thrown for over 2,000 yards and has 19 touchdown passes on the season to go along with 578 rushing yards. Keshaudas Spence and Tyler Dube are two of Noel's weapons the the Bulldogs must and will be aware of. Spence has rushed for 716 yards and three touchdowns on the season while Dube has caught 65 passes for 753 yards and 13 touchdowns on the year. The Pioneers as an offense are averaging just under 400 yards per game.
Sacred Heart has and explosive offense but they also sport one of the best defenses in the country. The Pioneers are fifth in total defense, fifth in rushing defense and third in scoring defense while their 16 interceptions lead the league and are third nationally.
This should be one of the best games of the year and you can see it on ESPN3.
Brown vs Dartmouth, Saturday, November 15th, 12 p.m.
The Brown Bears (4-4, 2-3 Ivy) travel to Dartmouth to take on the Big Green (6-2, 4-1 Ivy) in their final road game of the season. Last week, Brown lost a heartbreaker to Yale that cost them any chance they had of winning the Ivy League title. However, a winning season is still a possibility for the Bears.
For the Bears, senior quarterback Marcus Fuller will look to end his career on a high note in these last two games. Fuller passed for 393 yards and two touchdowns last week in the loss and has been terrific the entire year. Another senior, Reiley Higgins will look toe close out his career in style as well. Last week, he had seven receptions for 137 yards. These two will need to play well if the Bears want to finish with a winning record.
For the Big Green, Dalyn Williams is their quarterback and last week against Cornell he threw for 381 yards and four touchdowns. Williams comes into this game red hot and will look to stay that way against the Bears.
The game will be televised on Comcast Sportsnet in New England.
URI vs Stony Brook, Saturday, November 15th, 1 p.m.
The Rhode Island Rams (0-10,0-6) travel to Stony Brook on Saturday to take on the Seawolves (4-6, 3-3 CAA) in the second to last game of the season. This marks the first ever that the Rams have traveled to Stony Brook to play.
These teams have only met one time before in their histories and that was last year when Stony Brook beat the Rams 24-0 at home.
One of the story lines in this game is Rams senior running back Lyle McCombs enters the game one yard shy of reaching 3,000 career rushing yards which when he gets hit will rank him 21st among all active division one football players.
URI is still looking for their first win of the season and their first win in 14 games, going back to last season.
The game can be heard here.
