California’s Morikawa Wins 56th Northeast Amateur Championship
Sunday, June 25, 2017
California's Colin Morikawa shot a final round 1-over part 70 to win the 56th Northeast Amateur Championship at Wannamoisett Country Club on Saturday.
Morikawa shot an 11-under 265 for the week to beat Shintaro Ban’s and Theo Humphrey’s 9-under 267 score.
“I missed five of my first six greens, so I knew it wasn’t going to be an easy day out there. I just didn’t have my entire game out there. When I was making up-and-downs to save par all day, those are the ones that really count. I’m glad I found a way to win today,” Morikawa said after the round.

Morikawa Holds on
The Cal All-American started the final round with a one shot lead over University of Texas All-American Doug Ghim, before draining a birdie putt on the first hole to open a three shot lead combined with a Ghim bogey.
The lead stayed between one and three strokes for the entire day. Ghim cut the lead to one after a birdie at the par 4 13th hole. However, Ghim would bogey three of the final five holes to finish at 8-under par.
Morikawa held a two shot lead on the 18th hole and clinched the championship with an up-and-down for par, chipping to four feet and making the putt.
Local Finishes
Coventry’s Bobby Leopold finished in a tie for 36th, shooting even par for the tournament while Attleboro’s Davis Hatfield finished in a tie for 52nd.
