After Bryant University was the only Rhode Island Division 1 Men’s Basketball program to make the NCAA tournament this season, head coach Phil Martelli Jr. looks like he could be on to his next job.

According to ESPN, VCU is targeting Martelli Jr. to be the school's next coach.

A deal is  “expected to be finalized” in the near future, ESPN reported Wednesday morning.

Moving On

Martelli Jr. got the Bryant job not through a coaching search, but when head coach Jared Grasso flamed out, Martelli Jr., then the lead assistant coach, was elevated.

In his two seasons at Bryant, Martelli Jr. was 43-25.

This season, the Bulldogs, who won their conference tournament, earned a No. 15 seed in this year’s Big Dance and lost to No. 2 seed Michigan State 87-62.

VCU Head Coach Ryan Odom is leaving for Virginia.

Martelli Jr. was GoLocal’s Rhode Island Coach of the Year for the past two years.
