One thing I was once so certain of that I might be willing to bet the family farm, if my family ever owned a farm, is that everyone knows and understands the definition of insanity. That is until the most recent election to see who would replace former Democrat congressman David Cicilline.

The popular definition of insanity is for a person to continue doing the same thing over and over again but expecting a different result.

No longer do I hold to that belief. Actually, I gave up believing it some time ago.

Voters in Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District recently voted to give another Democrat and product of the Obama, Raimondo, and Biden administrations, Gabe Amo, victory by a 2 to 1 margin over a man who gave 30 years of his life to the honorable service of his country, Colonel Gerry Leonard, USMC. Col. Leonard and his family willingly accepted all the hardships and deprivations (and in his case they were numerous) that came with his decision to serve his country as a combat infantry Marine. Such a man might lose in a tight race among an enlightened electorate but no way by a 2 to 1 margin.

When Leonard spoke of service before self and principles over politics, he was not just mouthing campaign slogans, he was speaking truth. That is exactly what he did.

Democrats have held power in Rhode Island’s general assembly for decades. Yet regardless, our Rhode Island continues to place among the bottom five of our fifty states in most, if not all, critical areas usually cited for measuring the effectiveness and efficiencies of a state. And our Democrat friends in state government manage to achieve this claim to fame despite our nearly $14 billion budget and a population of barely one million — an absolute absurdity.

Mr. Amo’s major claim to his worthiness to serve the residents of CD1 seems to be that he served in the administrations of two presidents whose primary goal was and seemingly continues to be to fundamentally transform the United States of America. In my opinion, when one goes about striving to fundamentally transform our republic, the goal is to establish a socialist society and eventually a communist state. Significant progress towards achieving that goal has been made in the past three years of bringing our exceptional nation to its knees.

If I am correct, then it necessarily follows that the voters of CD1 have just elected a man who is sympathetic to the Obama and Biden objective of promoting socialism. Bernie Sanders and the D.C. Squad will welcome Mr. Amo with open arms. Well done CD1 voters.

At the risk of alienating relatives and friends, this and other consistently bizarre election results leave me no alternative but to lop all voters for Obama, Raimondo and Biden, et al, and incumbent politicians into one of five categories – uninformed, misinformed, naïve, cowardly or complicit.

But clearly, they either do not understand the meaning of insanity or choose to ignore it.

Peter Hewett retired with the rank of Captain in 1992 after serving 28 years of active duty in the U.S. Navy.
