World Champion Weightlifter James F. “Jimmy” Kempf, Dies at 65

James F. “Jimmy” Kempf, 65, passed away on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at Berkshire Place Nursing Home with his family by his side.  

Born in Providence, he was a son of the late John and Marilyn (Cronin) Kempf. He was a lifelong resident of Cranston. Jimmy will be remembered as a quiet gentleman who was a great athlete. Although born with Spina Bifida and never having the use of his legs, he excelled in wheelchair sports.

He beat all the odds with grace and met all challenges with determination and perseverance. Jimmy was a world champion weightlifter, discus and shot-put medal winner traveling the world with the Paraplegic Association of Rhode Island competing in many events. 

Jimmy was a graduate of Pilgrim High School and the Hall Institute of Technology. He enjoyed mentoring other young athletes and was an avid Red Sox fan. In later years, he enjoyed driving his car to Cape Cod and the Rhode Island shore. 

He leaves a brother, John J. Kempf, a sister, Donna M. Johnson and her husband, David. He is also survived by two nieces, a nephew and many great-nieces and nephews. 

Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial in Saint Paul Church, One St. Paul Place, Edgewood on Tuesday August 2, 2022 at 10 AM. Burial will be in Saint Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket.
