Velia (Val) Costantino, of North Kingstown, Dies at 96

Velia (Val) Costantino, 96, of North Kingstown died on June 14, 2021.

She was the 2nd of 12 children, born to the late Erminio and Giovannina (Colannino) Costantino.

Born in Providence on Federal Hill, she was proud of her Italian heritage and was involved in Italian organizations all her life.

A graduate of the Dante Alighieri School, she was fluent in Italian and was a court interpreter for several years. She was a world traveler and visited her beloved Italy about 15 times.

Val worked at Narragansett Electric Co. for over 40 years as a telephone operator. In her retirement, she embraced the arts, designed jewelry, and scarves.

She was a lifetime devoted fan of Sophia Loren and corresponded with her several times a year and fulfilled her dream of meeting her three times. She ventured into acting as an extra in 13 movies made in RI and co-hosted a cooking show on local tv. A favorite pastime, Val could be found sunning herself on any good beach day at Bonnet Shores.

She leaves four siblings, Erma Appolonia, Virginia Grande, David Costantino, and Beverly Rosedale, and was predeceased by Angelina Burton, Marie Simeone, Joseph, Ralph, Al, Richard, and William Costantino.

Her funeral service will take place, Friday, June 18th at 11:00 am in Woodlawn Funeral Home, 600 Pontiac Avenue, Cranston.

Visiting hours 9:30-11:00 am, burial will follow in St. Ann’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude PL Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
