Teacher Edith J. Johnston of South Kingstown Dies at 87

Edith J. Johnston, 87, of South Kingstown, passed away Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at home. Born in Houlton, ME, she was the daughter of the late Frederick W. and Albertina (Libby) Johnston.
Edith earned her bachelor’s degree in 1957 at the University of Maine. She went on to complete her master's degree at the University of Rhode Island in 1967. Throughout her teaching career, she taught in Cape Elizabeth, ME, and elementary schools in Wakefield, North Kingstown, Warwick, and Westerly. She was a former member of the Rhode Island Teacher’s Association, National Education Honor Society, and Kappa Delta Pi. Edith was also a faithful member of Wakefield Baptist Church for many years. In her spare time, she enjoyed volunteering at South County Hospital.
Edith is survived by her siblings Everett Johnston, Freda MacVicar, and Sylvia Murray; as well as several nieces and nephews. She is also the sister of the late Robert Johnston, Charles Johnston, Ivan Johnston, and Louise Mackin.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Animal Rescue Rhode Island, P.O. Box 458, Wakefield, RI 02880 or Canonicus Camp and Conference Center, of the American Baptist Church, at 54 Exeter Road, Exeter, RI 02822.
Services will be held at a later date at the Wakefield Baptist Church and in Houlton, Maine.
