Marine Corps Veteran, Richard M. Murphy, of Bristol, Passes at 67

Richard M. Murphy, age 67, passed away peacefully at his home in Bristol, R.I., after succumbing to a brave battle with cancer. He was surrounded by those he loved.

Richard was born in Providence, R.I, and was a long-time resident of Bristol, R.I. He is the only son of Edna (Purcell) Dennis and the late Richard Murphy. He is survived by his beloved wife, Paula R. Murphy.

Richard leaves behind one son, Jason Murphy, of Fall River, MA, and stepdaughters, Wendy Botelho of Somerset, MA., and Kimberly Ramsay of Bristol, R.I. Grandchildren Cheyenne, Alexandra, and Dylan Murphy of Fall River, MA., Devon Wiggins of Nantucket, MA. and step-grandchildren, Cameron, Christopher and Kelsey Botelho of Somerset, MA. as well as, Ashley and Kiley Ramsay of Bristol, R.I. and great-grandson Justin Dennis Arruda Jr. of Bristol, R.I. His much-loved sisters Kathleen M. Arruda, of Westport, MA., and MaryEllen Montville, of Fall River, MA. He also leaves behind cherished nieces and nephews as well as his beloved aunts and uncles.

Richard prized the time he served his country with honor as a Lance Corporal in the 2nd Battalion of the United States Marine Corps while stationed in the Mediterranean and Caribbean. It was his great privilege to be called a Marine. Before his retirement as a nurse's aide, Richard took considerable pride in the care, compassion, and dignity he was privileged to afford those in his charge at Blenheim-Newport and John Clarke Nursing Home, Middletown, R.I.

He also took immense pride in his Irish heritage and wholeheartedly enjoyed the time he spent visiting Ireland. A lover of music, Richard enjoyed playing his banjo and listening to James Taylor. He loved spending time by the ocean, watching documentaries, and listening to Sherlock Holmes.

Richard's arrangements are in the care of Family's Choice Cremation, Inc. of 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, R.I.

Per his request, Richard's wake and funeral service are respectfully omitted. A private family service will be held at the Cremation Garden, North Burial Ground, Bristol, R.I. at a future date.

A celebration of Richard's life will follow at a date to be announced.

Richard's family wishes to express their gratitude for the compassionate care provided by Hope Health and Dr. Christopher Azzoli.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a cancer charity of your choice.


Family’s Choice Cremation is affiliated with Smith Funeral & Memorial Services. They have their own crematory and keep the overhead low by meeting with clients in their homes or a place they feel comfortable and if necessary, they have a modest office. They are available during regular business hours, Monday thru Friday 9am-4pm. Should you be in need of direct cremation services due to a death, they can be reached 24 hours a day.
