Manuel Custodio Fernandes Dies to 66

Manuel Custodio Fernandes, 66, was the beloved husband of Maria C. Pedro Fernandes. The loving father of Andre Fernandes and the cherished grandfather (Avo) of Andre Fernandes, Jr., Rylee and Easton Fernandes.

Manuel was the son the Amelia do Coto Cortinheiro and the late Jose Fernandes. He is survived by his sisters Maria de Fatima Alipio, late Rosa Fernandes of Portugal, Dorinda Fernandes of Switzerland.  His sister-in-law Maria Amelia Aoyama and his cousins who were like siblings to him; Antonino Ribeiro, Manuel “Billy” Cortinheiro and Maria Cortinheiro Cerqueira; and many cherished cousins, nieces, nephews in the US, Portugal, Switzerland, and China.

Manuel was born in Gavieira, Arcos de Valdevez, Portugal. He came to the US in 1973. He was a polisher by trade working in the jewelry industry throughout his career, eventually owning Amelia Jewelry Polishing Company.  He loved his soccer team, PORTO! There was no bigger fan! He also loved gardening, especially taking care of his fig tree, and showering his family and friends with the gift of figs. He was always the life of the party.

Manuel loved his family and adored his grandchildren. He was a member of the Cranston Portuguese Club for many years, where he enjoyed playing cards with his friends.

Visiting will be held on Monday, July 11, 2022, from 9:00 -10:00 am at the NARDOLILLO FUNERAL HOME & Crematory, 1278 Park Ave, Cranston. Followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11:00 am at St. Matthew’s Church, 1299 Elmwood Avenue, Cranston, 02910. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery.
