Army Veteran, Gregory Michael Watkins Sr., of N. Providence, Passes at 74

Gregory Michael Watkins, Sr. a.k.a. “Ducky” of North Providence, Rhode Island, was called home peacefully at the Orchard View Manor Nursing Home with his daughters by his side. 

He was the husband of Debra (Normandin) Watkins. 

Gregory was born in Baltimore, MD on May 10, 1947 to the late James Ellsworth Watkins, Sr., and the late Mary Ann (Soares) Watkins. Gregory is survived by his two daughters Dawn and Denise Watkins both of Providence, RI and one son Gregory Watkins Jr. of Florida, two step-sons, Damond and Tyrone Normandin of New Bedford, MA.  He is survived by his siblings Veda Thomas of Providence, RI, Anthony “Bibsy” Watkins of North Providence, RI and Clifton (Donna) Watkins of Warwick, RI.   He is survived by nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Gregory is preceded by his siblings Ronald, James, and Jeffrey Watkins.

Gregory served as Private – E1 in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with Bronze Device 1960, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, and the Purple Heart with One Oak Leaf Cluster, in honor of his bravery and faithful service. Following his career in the army, he worked in the construction industry for 25 years. 

He was a musician, an avid bass player and he played the bass guitar in several bands.

Gregory will be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
