Former Dean of URI Library Professor David C. Maslyn, Sr. Dies

Professor David C. Maslyn, Sr. passed peacefully at Westerly Hospital July 2, 2023.

 

David was born to Lawrence and Mary Maslyn in 1936 in Geneva, NY. He completed advanced degrees at St. Bonaventure and Syracuse University and began his career at Yale in 1967. A professor of Library Science, David moved his family to Rhode Island in 1974. He was employed at the University of Rhode Island for 40 years, ultimately becoming dean of the library.

 

While serving as head of the Special Collections department at URI, David was instrumental in adding extensive primary research resources to the library and founding the New Leaves Press, which utilized antique printing equipment. He was a member of the Society of American Archivists.

 

David is survived by his partner of 40 years, Linda “Sam” Mugica; his four sons, David (spouse Suzanne), Glenn, Shawn, and Braden (spouse Jess); four grandchildren, Brianna, David, Ryan and Emily as well as two brothers, Edwin and Michael Maslyn.

 

Calling hours will be held in Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St, Wakefield, RI will from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday, July 14th, 2023. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Mary’s Church, 437 Carolina Back Rd., Charlestown, RI at 10 am on Saturday, July 15th. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
