Elorza Drops Water Plans
Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza has abandoned his plan to sell or lease the Providence Water Supply -- the Scituate Reservoir. Elorza's plan was to use the revenue to decrease the unfunded liability of the Providence pension fund.
Elorza was flanked by elected officials and community leaders on Thursday at City Hall where he announced that he was having sponsors of the bill to sell or lease the Providence Water Supply pull the legislation.

The Pawtucket Red Sox have scheduled “Ladies Day” as one of this coming season’s promotional events.
The event features all you can eat BBQ, a pre-game catch, and a PawSox stemless wine glass for those attending.

Biltmore Name Change
The historic Biltmore Hotel name is being changed by the Chicago-based hotel group that owns the property to the Graduate Providence.
While new Graduate Hotel signage went up Tuesday, the landmark red light "Biltmore" on the roof will remain for the foreseeable future.
The Biltmore is owned by AJ Capital Partners, which asserts they have "over $2.3 billion gross acquisition value of real estate purchased since inception and more than $1.7 billion gross fair market value currently under asset management.” READ MORE HERE

Pushed Out
Providence College President Brian Shanley has had arguably one of the most successful runs as a college president as anyone in America.
Today, Providence College (PC) enjoys top rankings. “Providence College is ranked #2 in Regional Universities North. Schools are ranked according to their performance across a set of widely accepted indicators of excellence,” writes U.S.News & World Reports.
The announcement late on Friday afternoon of his upcoming departure came as a shock.
GoLocal has learned that Shanley’s departure is being forced by top Dominican officials that oversee PC and that those officials are concerned about the "liberalization of Providence College."

Foodie Mecca
In the 1980s and 1990s, Providence emerged on the national stage as a hotbed of great restaurants and cooking innovation. It was fueled by glowing write-ups of Al Forno and other restaurants by the likes of food writer John Mariani of Esquire magazine and food and travel writers at the New York Times.
Mariani became the megaphone for Johanne Killeen and her late husband’s George Germon’s famous grilled pizza — today a more common creation, but then, an innovation that could only be found in Providence and Italy.
A flurry of James Beard nominations and awards followed as did a restaurant competition between Providence and Boston in the 1990s engineered by Buddy Cianci. Providence won, but no word if Cianci flooded the results with mail ballots. READ MORE
