NEW: Tributes Pour in for George Lima

Elected officials are issuing tributes tonight to mark the passing of George Lima—the legendary former head of the Providence NAACP and a Tuskegee airman in World War II. He was 92.

Congressman and former Providence mayor David Cicilline praised Lima as a civil rights pioneer.

“It is with great respect that I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of the Honorable George Silva Lima,” Cicilline said. “Mr. Lima was a true community leader – engaged and involved, deeply committed to the well-being of his neighbors. … I join with the residents of Rhode Island in mourning his passing. His leadership and example will be sorely missed.”

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse also issued a statement:

“Today, Rhode Island lost a civil rights pioneer, honored veteran, champion for workers’ rights, and committed public servant,” Whitehouse said. “George Lima has left an indelible mark on our Ocean State, and it is with great sadness that I note his passing. We will be forever thankful for his work and dedication. Sandra and my thoughts and prayers are with the Lima family.”
