At least one Providence City Councilman is calling for Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare to eliminate the position of Chief of Police before limiting the police force.

In a letter sent to Pare this week, Michael Correia, who represents Ward  6, suggested getting rid of Police Chief Col. Dean Essserman as well as two major positions and the entire mounted command. Correia is calling for an immediate end to all take-home vehicles.

He estimates the city would immediately save over $811,514.

“I understand the immediate need for savings and the tenuous nature of union negotiations,” Correia wrote. “However, I would ask that you examine the following cost savings before taking any unilateral action which would jeopardize the safety of our residents by limiting our police force.”

The city announced this week it would lay off between 60-80 police officers as it attempts to balance its budget.

The Taveras administration was not immediately available for comment.
