A new website titled OldPVD.com officially launched on Thursday to mark buildings and places in Providence where things “used to be.”

“This site allows for the curation of crowdsourced images from the City’s archives, the Providence Preservation Society, the Providence Public Library, private collectors, historic organizations, and the general public who live in the 25 neighborhoods that make up the City of Providence. It’s a vast collection that now can be brought to life and accessed for free all in one place by schools, historians, researchers, and anyone with an interest in seeing where something used to be or still is,” said founder Maureen Taylor.

OldPVD.com is funded privately by Maureen Taylor and is powered by Chronocharts.com, a platform developed by Mike Bronner of Genealabs.com.

Visitors to the OldPVD.com can register and participate at no cost, and begin to research Providence’s architectural facts and places marked within the context of  historical maps.

Searches can be filtered by date or neighborhood.  After clicking on an inverted teardrop icon, a box pops up showing images and narrative describing that location marker.

Visitors can easily add their own place markers and discuss and share insights by typing in comments or sharing stories of their own
