“It Was Awful, I Can’t Describe It” — Puerto Rico Hit by More Earthquakes
Sunday, January 12, 2020
Puerto Rico has been hit by more earthquakes, following the 6.4 magnitude quake that struck Tuesday.
Former Brown University Professor and Rhode Island Congressional candidate Jennifer Lawless was in Puerto Rico this week -- and reported back to GoLocal on the latest earthquakes.
“Had another earthquake yesterday,” Lawless told GoLocalProv on Saturday. “I was in the room alone. It was awful, I can’t describe it. We didn't sleep at all."

"We came to the airport at 6 AM -- with my flight being 1:30 PM -- because we couldn't be in the hotel anymore. Then we experienced another 6.0 quake at the airport.”
Lawless is a regular contributor on GoLocal LIVE, and is currently the Commonwealth Professor of Politics at the University of Virginia, and is a Co-Editor of the American Journal of Political Science.
Latest from Puerto Rico
As CNN reported, an earthquake with a 5.9 magnitude rattled Puerto Rico on Saturday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Puerto Rico has been rattled by temblors throughout the week, including a 6.4 magnitude quake Tuesday that killed at least one man, destroyed homes and left most of the island without power. A 5.2 magnitude aftershock struck on Friday afternoon.
The US territory was expecting power to return by Saturday to its 3 million residents, and authorities had tweeted that it was 95% restored a couple of hours before Saturday's quake about 8 a.m.
On Tuesday, Lawless shared the photo from her hotel room — and comment — following the first earthquake.
“We ran down 14 flights of steps to leave our hotel room. We’ve been up since the 6.4 magnitude earthquake at 4:30 AM. It’s among the scariest things we’ve ever experienced, but we are okay,” she said.
Aftershock Forecast
The U.S. Geological Survey provided the following update on Saturday:
"The forecast for January 11 indicates the likelihood of large magnitude aftershocks remains relatively low as we move further away from the Jan. 7, 2020, M 6.4 earthquake.
Over the next 7 days there is now a 5 percent chance of one or more aftershocks larger than M 6.4.
However, there is still a high likelihood of M 3.0+ aftershocks in the coming week; these M 3.0+ quakes may be felt near the epicenters.
The rate of aftershocks will continue to decline over time. A large aftershock or new mainshock would, once again, increase the frequency and magnitude of aftershocks."
