VIDEO: Local Student Wins Four-Year Scholarship at GRRL Tech Expo

Tech Collective's GRRL Tech expo at Roger Williams University ended with the presentation of a full scholarship for a local high student. GoLocalProv caught the excitement on video.

The winner, Kate Farinha, will receive a scholarship with $110,000. Farinha is a junior at Seekonk High School.

She was selected from among approximately 50 high school girls who submitted essays on the topic of "green sustainability." The winner was selected by a committee comprised of representatives from the Tech Collective, Roger Williams University, and the tech industry.

The Essay Question: “With global warming being an issue and looking at ways to “Go Green” to preserve and, in some cases, reverse the effects on our environment, how would you help with this complex issue by incorporating Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics?”

Excerpts from Her Response

As little girl I embraced my love for nature. Walking through the woods with my family, hiking mountains, searching through rock walls for snakes, and investigating every miniscule detail of the world were all part of my typical routine. Still, I often sit outside just to relax in the sun and listen to all of the birds sounding their calls. At times such as these, thoughts of all sorts zip through my mind, from how beautiful the earth and its organisms truly are to what it would become if the global population does not start to change its wasteful ways.

Although ecology may not commonly be one of the top areas of interests for someone who enjoys mathematics, it is on my list. I decided to take the initiative and learn more about my environment, so I signed up for an AP Biology course at my school. It allowed me the chance to fully understand how life works and to appreciate it to an even greater degree. My adoration for nature has since increased, and I have been seriously considering becoming a “Green Architect”. Brainstorming ideas and pathways for this future has become habitual throughout my day, and I am genuinely lucky to have so many supportive adults with whom I am able to bounce ideas off of. ...
