EDITORIAL: Dandy Don’s Destruction of Pawtucket
Tuesday, August 25, 2020
Recent GoLocal exposés have uncovered that Pawtucket tax and water sales are destroying the lives of local families ranging from new immigrants chasing the American dream of owning a home to the case of a dying man and his cancerous wive devastated by chemotherapy.
The sales were executed under the leadership of Pawtucket Mayor Don Grebien, but for the purposes of this editorial, let’s call him Dandy Don.
These episodes are the latest in the destruction of the gritty old New England town under Dandy Don’s reign — a city that once was the home to the PawSox, Pawtucket Memorial Hospital, the Gamm Theatre and so much more. All of these assets were lost to Pawtucket under Dandy Don's leadership.
GET THE LATEST BREAKING NEWS HERE -- SIGN UP FOR GOLOCAL FREE DAILY EBLASTAfter GoLocal unveiled the cases of the Pawtucket residents losing their homes just $1,500 and a little more than $3,000 respectively, Pawtucket’s Dandy Don did what he always does— nothing.
Call Pawtucket City Hall and listen to Dandy Don’s welcoming message. Then, play the role of a resident trying to get information about taxes by entering the extension for the Tax Collector’s office. Listen to the more than two-minute voices message — confusing at best, and functionally incoherent, which at the end you can leave a message that won’t be returned the same day.
How does GoLocal know, we tried it. Here are the number and extension (401) 728-0500, extension 344. It is worth the call just to hear Dandy Don welcome you.
Dandy Don, the affable and ineffective mayor has had a consistent record of pronouncements and press conferences followed closely by nothing.
The bumbling loss of many of the city’s most cherished institutions — a hospital, a sports team, and a leading theater group is an embarrassment and all achieved by Dandy Don.
Homes being stolen away for chump change by the city however is unconscionable.
But, let’s wait, Dandy Don is sure to swing into action soon (or not) and hold a press conference and then keep his perfect record alive - achieving nothing.
Welcome to Dandy Don’s Pawtucket.
