PHOTOS: Christopher Columbus Statue in Providence Vandalized in Protest on Holiday

The statue of Christopher Columbus in Columbus Square in the Elmwood section of Providence has been vandalized on Columbus Day -- again.

Red paint was splattered across the statue, along with the word "Genocide" at the base -- and a sign stating "Stop Celebrating Genocide" at the pedestal.

The statue has been vandalized in the past, including in 2010 and 2017.

Cities Opting for Indigenous Peoples' Day Over Columbus Day

Multiple cities around the country are opting to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples' day

As ABC NEWS reported

Washington, D.C., will join the list of cities and states to recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day in place of Columbus Day, after the D.C. Council passed emergency legislation on Tuesday to rename the federal holiday.
