Angel Cooper on GoLocal LIVE

Juneteenth RI committee member Anger Cooper appeared on GoLocal LIVE where she spoke to this year’s event, in light of the local and national protests, and said she believes people are "waking up" the need to address continued racism.

“We are dealing not just with one pandemic but with two — first with COVID, and now the killing of black women and men,” said Cooper, of what has taken place since her last appearance on LIVE to talk about the committee’s Celebration of Excellence in February.

“We just want to remember these dates, such as Juneteenth, which signifies the mark of the emancipation of slavery,” she said. “We had to make some changes — usually it’s outside at the park, but now we’re bringing it inside virtually.”

“I think we are just really waking up to the fact that we are still dealing with racism at a very high level,” said Cooper. “I think now the conversation is we’re challenging those to be part of the solution and not just being part of the problem.”

“We’re moving in the right direction — I believe that we just need to continue the fight,” she added. “I’m hoping this just doesn’t fade away. We’re making the noise, we’re bringing the noise, we’re letting everyone know that we’re not going to just sit back and allow you to kill us off and mistreat us — that we have a voice. So I believe we’re heading in the right direction.”
