Lt. Governor Dan McKee, on GoLocal LIVE.

Rhode Island Lieutenant Governor Dan McKee appeared on GoLocal LIVE where he made an appeal to Rhode Islanders to help military families through the Rhode Island Military Family Relief Fund.

Established by a bill sponsored by former Lieutenant Governor Charles Fogarty and signed into law in 2004, the fund provides support to the families of Rhode Island National Guard service members and other active-duty military personnel in times of need.

The fund is administered by the adjutant general with support from an advisory group that includes the Lt. Governor’s Office -- and is funded not by the General Assembly, but through donations.

“The way it works, if a military person gets deployed…and those families have a financial hardship because of that deployment, there’s an application process where they could receive up to $5,000 to help them with their rent, that car payment, or the grocery bill,” said McKee, noting that last year, $63,000 was given to Rhode Island military families in need.

McKee said that some years, however, that number has been as high as $140,000 — and that currently, the fund’s balance is the lowest it has ever been.

How to Support

McKee spoke to how Rhode Islanders can support the fund — by checking off a box on their state tax filing that gives $1 to the fund; by purchasing an American flag decal at the DMV or AAA locations, or by calling the Lt. Governor’s office to make a donation to the nonprofit.

With tax season, McKee noted that it’s “timely” that Rhode Islanders know about the program.

“It’s a great program,” said McKee, noting it was a good way for Rhode Islanders to “say thanks” to military members and their families for their service.
