First Incident
Shortly before 6 p.m. Friday night, police were patrolling the vicinity of the G.I. Joe Convenience Store at 445 Smith Street following what they say have been repeated incidents of firearm-related activity.
Police observed two men in the parking lot “gripping unknown objects in their waistband areas” — including JC Black, who had been a shooting victim at the location in 2020.
Upon seeing the police, the two men fled on foot, with police in pursuit.
Black — who was in possession of a firearm — reportedly resisted arrest when caught on Chalkstone Avenue.
According to police, Black was given multiple verbal commands to release his grip on his firearm, in what police described as an “intense struggle.’
Police confiscated the weapon and arrested Black on multiple charges. Police were unable to locate the other individual.
Second Incident
At approximately 11:45 p.m. Friday night, police were on patrol in South Providence in an effort to reduce gun violence there.
Police were in the area on Michigan Avenue near a 2018 homicide memorial, when they noticed a vehicle idling for an extended period of time nearby.
Police reported pulling alongside the vehicle and observing two male occupants in the vehicle, including a passenger who bent down in an apparent effort to hide something.
When police exited their vehicle to approach the driver’s side window, the driver took off in reverse, ultimately mounting a sidewalk, rendering the car disabled.
According to police, the driver — later identified as Joshua Salano — fled the scene on foot, running through backyards on Michigan Avenue toward Ohio Avenue.
Solano was apprehended in a backyard on Indiana Avenue.
Police said in following the path taken by Solano, they found a “ghost gun” placed among some leaves and changes, and a magazine containing live ammunition alongside.
Both Solano and the vehicle’s passenger Nelson Goncalves were taken to Central Station for booking.
