UPDATED: Providence Developing Detailed Plans to Furlough Hundreds of City Workers

GoLocal has learned that Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza's administration has developed detailed plans to furlough hundreds of Providence city employees.

The plan is for 450 to 525 employees to go on furlough for one to two days a week.

Employees will be able to leverage the state's “job share” program and will receive both state and federal benefits. They may be eligible for the $600 a week federal job benefits.

According to multiple sources, the city hopes to save as much as $2.5 million.

Details Emerging

Providence police and fire are exempt from the furloughs. 

The city has repeatedly refused to give details on the city’s financial situation during the coronavirus driven shutdown.

The furloughs may begin this week.

GoLocal also has learned that in April the city lost nearly one-third of its meals tax revenue in March. It is unclear how successful the city has been in collecting other taxes and revenue.
