Since the City of Providence assumed maintenance of the park from the State of Rhode Island, the once celebrated venue has fallen into disrepair and has become covered with graffiti.

In 1999, the New York Times wrote, “Today this half-mile swath bears a new name, Waterplace Park, and with its new outlook hints of a Venice in New England. Much of the credit goes to the architect William D. Warner, who, though he didn't exactly part the asphalt, has created a model of urban revitalization, turning what was once a desert of hardtop and highway into a canal and promenade.”

About Incident

Shortly after 9:30 PM on Wednesday, police responded to 100 Exchange Street for a report of a stabbing.

Police said they located the victim under a Waterplace Park bridge with multiple stab wounds to his neck and torso.

According to police, witnesses who saw the stabbing provided a description of the suspect.

Police say they were able to locate a person matching the description a short time later on Memorial Boulevard.

The suspect — a juvenile — has been taken into custody.

The victim is currently in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital.
