Governor Gina Raimondo's administration continues to update data

Rhode Island nursing home patients have been among the hardest hit in the United States, according to new data released this week.

The data shows the Rhode Island nursing home patients comprise the overwhelming majority of the deaths in the state.

To date, 418 Rhode Islanders have died from the coronavirus. In data collected across the country, Rhode Island is ranked fourth as having the highest percentage of deaths linked to nursing homes -- a staggering 66%. But, that number may be an underestimation.

The national data was collected by the New York Times and unveils that "at least 27,600 residents and workers have died from the coronavirus at nursing homes and other long-term care facilities for older adults in the United States, according to a New York Times database. The virus so far has infected more than 150,000 at some 7,700 facilities."

The New York Times data shows that Rhode Island nursing home related-deaths are near twice the national average of 35%, but in fact, the percentages are even higher.

Rhode Island, which has not updated much of its data in nearly a week, shows that approximately 2,000 coronavirus cases are tied to nursing homes and assisted living facilities. RI Department of Health repeatedly has blocked requests by GoLocal for information about facilities impacted and number of patients at nursing homes impacted.

But, the percentage of deaths tied to nursing may be as high as 77%, according to the Rhode Island Department of Health data. State data shows between 314 and 323 of the state's 419 deaths are linked to nursing homes.

Tesla Sues California to Reopen Its Manufacturing Plant

The Wall Street Journal reports:

Tesla Inc. has asked a federal judge to allow the electric-car maker to reopen its lone U.S. assembly factory, calling a local government’s insistence that it remain closed to fight the spread of Covid-19 a power grab that defies the U.S. Constitution.

The lawsuit, filed Saturday, followed a new string of messages on Twitter by a frustrated Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk, saying he is ready to abandon California as the company’s home after Alameda County officials said Tesla can’t resume production even as the state begins to start reopening.

The Tesla CEO, through Twitter, on Saturday morning said: “Tesla is filing a lawsuit against Alameda County immediately. The unelected & ignorant “Interim Health Officer” of Alameda is acting contrary to the Governor, the President, our Constitutional freedoms & just plain common sense!”
