Roberts on Wanting to Make RI Pay for Late Tax Returns on LIVE

Sherry Roberts
Representative Sherry Roberts joined GoLocal News Editor Kate Nagle at the Rhode Island State House, where she spoke to legislation she sponsored to hold the state responsible for late tax returns.

“This legislation, [House Bill] 7487, this first came from Doreen Costa,” said Roberts. “Our government bureaucracies holds taxpayers accountable with fees, having to pay by a certain deadline -- I think taxpayers should be able to hold government bureaucracies accountable also.”

“So I introduced this bill and what it does it that anybody who files taxes -- who doesn't get them within 90 days of filing — would be able to hold government bureaucracies accountable in a way that they would have to pay by that day, or each day would be compounded by 12% daily for each day after that 90 days that they haven't received their tax refund,” said Roberts.

HB 7487 has been held for further study.
