“This is What the Average Rhode Islander Doesn’t Like,” Says Giarrusso of PawSox Deal on LIVE

Rep. Anthony Giarrusso
Senior Deputy House Minority Leader Anthony Giarrusso joined GoLocal News Editor Kate Nagle on GoLocal LIVE ahead of the House Finance consideration of PawSox legislation on Thursday, where he spoke to the process — and more.

“It’s Groundhog Day,” said Giarrusso of the state considering legislation, once again, to provide public support for the private ownership of the AAA team. “It's the same thing over and over again with minor tweaks.

“There might have been one constituent [who wanted it] in the past few years,” said Republican Giarrusso, who represents parts of East Greenwich and West Greenwich, when asked what his district sought of the prospect.  “I love the PawSox, I love baseball -- but they are a private business -- if one factory wants to build another factory, the state's not going to be involved - so why does a baseball team have to be any different?"

"Why are they not just going to Worcester? If the reports [are true] —if Worcester is offering them a good deal, where they're only on the hook for $18 million, nothing I've seen here is that lucrative,” said Giarrusso.

“This is the kind of stuff the average Rhode Islander doesn’t like — it’s in committee, an hour later on the floor then tomorrow in the Senate and then on the Governor’s desk,” said Giarrusso, who added, “The PawSox have been in the building, we’ve heard a lot of stuff...so it’s not something that completely arises from the ashes.”
