Prov. Firefighter Union Chief Doughty Blasts Zurier for Secret Pension Working Group on LIVE
Wednesday, May 02, 2018
Providence Firefighter Union President Paul Doughty joined GoLocal News Editor Kate Nagle on GoLocal LIVE, after City Councilman Sam Zurier met with other council members and the city’s Chief Operating Officer to look at the city’s unfunded pension liability — and didn’t include anyone from labor.
Doughty spoke to the diminished prospects that the union would want to meet moving forward, having been at the table to negotiate reforms just five years ago -- before being left out of the recent process that produced a public report, which Zurier said was to “demonstrate both the critical need to resolve the pension issue soon, and the absence of any easy or painless solutions.”
Doughty also addressed how the 2013 pension settlement agreed to by former Mayor Angel Taveras and the city's current and retired public safety workers, that called for the city to modify existing union contracts, was agreed to by current council members including Zurier — who told the union at the time that the city would never re-open the negotiated agreement.
