Patricia Morgan said she would tap former AG Violet
Republican gubernatorial candidate for Rhode Island Governor Patricia Morgan joined GoLocal News Editor Kate Nagle on LIVE, where she spoke to her intent to name former Rhode Island Attorney General Arlene Violet as Inspector General in a newly created office, if elected.
“In the Republican Caucus, we have been fighting for years to pass a law to establish the critical watchdog only to be turned aside by our state leaders. When I am Governor, we will wait no longer. On my first day, I will establish the Office of the Inspector General by Executive Order. Since this office will not possess subpoena power, I pledge to fight for the Office of an Independent Inspector General to be established through the General Assembly and will not sign a budget that does not include that office. It is that important," said Morgan.
“The Inspector General will have the full cooperation of my administration. As you will remember, my Republican colleagues and I studied the Convention Center Authority four years ago. With limited staff and using multiple APRA requests, we revealed an operation that was fraught with waste and abuse. It took us months, yet an Inspector General with full-time staff and access to all the necessary documents could have investigated and released findings in half the time," said Morgan.
Morgan noted that she has had discussions with Violet about the prospect.
“DOT is another area of concern. I discovered change orders on the Southbound viaduct that exploded an initial $1 million contract to over $40 million without the cost savings inherent in competitive bidding," said Morgan. "An Inspector General would have been able to catch and stop this abusive practice."
In the interview, Morgan also called out Governor Gina Raimondo for announcing a ban on guns on school grounds, saying the pronouncement had no enforceability -- and was simply a "headline grab" by the Governor.
