RI Needs Hope, Not Jail Time for Recovery, Says Activist Galipeau on LIVE
Wednesday, May 23, 2018
Mike Galipeau with the Rhode Island Users Union appeared on GoLocal LIVE on Tuesday, after more than 60 medical professionals and organizations in Rhode Island urged the Senate to reject legislation that would impose up to a life sentence on those who provide an unlawful controlled substance to a person that results in that person’s death
“I’m someone who's been convicted multiple times of [the] sales, manufacture, and delivery [of drugs], and yet here I stand -- and it was only because of the persistent efforts of groups of advocates that believed in my capacity to change and my capacity to recover from the circumstances that I was living in,” said Galipeau. “That gave me hope, drove me to go back to school, to become a social worker, graduated top in my class at RIC. Five years of continuous sobriety -- how can I spread the message of hope if we put [people] in jail for life?"
