LIVE: Save The Bay Holds Rhode Island's Coastal Cleanup

Cindy Sabato
As part of the 32nd annual International Coastal Cleanup led by the Ocean Conservancy, Save The Bay and communities across Rhode Island are holding Rhode Island’s Coastal Cleanup Saturday, September 16.

Cindy Sabato with Save The Bay says for the fourth year, volunteers in Rhode Island will gather at  85-90 shoreline sites on Saturday and other dates throughout September and October to clean up beaches and waterways in the state.

All of the trash collected is recorded and the data is sent to the Ocean Conservancy for a global Ocean Trash Index report.

In 2016, Sabato says Rhode Island volunteers collected 14,911 pounds of trash along 65 miles of Rhode Island shoreline. Among that trash, 46,574 cigarette butts were picked up and 35,882 bottles, bottle caps, cans, straws and other beverage-related litter items were removed from beaches.
